It was our last year in secondary school and our second-last performance with the CCA, so when we were told that there would be group performances, the two of us decided to do one last big project before stepping down.
Over the course of 3 months, we worked on the four different parts: melody, harmony, chords and bass. It was our first time stepping away from arranging solo scores, so we had to adapt to the more complex rhythms and mixing so the song didn't sound too messy. We encountered an issue where players would have awkward finger placements and unrealistic jumps that hindered their playing, which we overcame by playing through each part together and adjusting the scores when needed.
Despite facing many setbacks and struggling with time constraints, we managed to create a piece that both of us were proud to perform to our audience. Through this project, I found that I my ability to discern different instruments and lines of melody by ear had improved significantly. Along with that, I learnt that it is alright for arrangements and covers to be slightly different from the original song, as changes will sometimes be required to fit specific instruments.
