finding my passion for music ( choir )

In primary 3, choir was one of my top options for a co-curricular activity simply for one reason- the air-conditioning. It was a quick decision for me as a child who just wanted to take the ‘easiest’ option. However, choir was not as simple as just singing a song.

There were endless scales, vocal warm ups and sight-reading involved. Since I had some piano background, I was not too intimidated by the new music techniques. This continued until secondary school, where I joined choir again.

My conductor put huge amounts of pressure on my batch, as she had high expectations for us. The exco and section leaders were required to be able to sight-read on the spot, have accurate rhythm, and be able to teach our juniors well. Through having my first leadership role as a section leader, I learnt how to set and manage expectations of the choir and I gradually found joy in leading my section mates during sectionals and choir eventually became an enjoyable time I looked forward to twice a week.

Now, in junior college, I am still in the same co-curricular activity that helped me to discover my passion for music through singing and the piano and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to have such a long and fulfilling music experience and journey.
