Day 6 Reflection

To kick off the day, we attended a panel discussion featuring two guest speakers, both of whom shared inspiring journeys of resilience and innovation. The first speaker, from MPH, detailed his multifaceted career path, starting as a journalist before transitioning into roles in coal mining and corporate social responsibility, where he tackled issues like deforestation. His experience working at an eco-lodge was particularly transformative, as he explored ways to differentiate businesses for sustainability. He created tourism packages combining agricultural practices, meditation, and cultural exchanges, which not only generated income but also provided him with ideas and resources for further growth. His subsequent ventures into organic farming and waste management demonstrated his ability to “connect the dots” across industries, balancing profitability with impactful work.

Currently, at MPH, he also works in ESG consultancy, helping businesses manage waste during large corporate events, which serves as another source of revenue for MPH. This highlights flexibility and innovation in business. One of his key takeaways was the importance of recognising when a role or business no longer offers growth or learning opportunities, encouraging a logical approach to deciding when to move on.

The second speaker, Nopi Trimulyono, founder of the Aryo Laundry Group, shared his entrepreneurial journey, which began after over a decade in the hospitality industry. Having worked in hotels across Malaysia, he gained operational expertise, guest management skills, and an understanding of addressing complaints. When the COVID-19 pandemic led to job losses, he took a leap of faith and started a laundry business, choosing this venture for its consistent demand and relatively low risk.

Using his life savings, he began with a single second-hand machine, gradually reinvesting profits to expand his operations. Despite challenges such as equipment breakdowns, Nopi scaled his business to multiple locations by identifying market needs and testing the feasibility of each outlet. He also emphasised the importance of separating family from business, sharing how financial support for his family did not yield the intended outcomes, ultimately teaching him a valuable lesson.

What resonated deeply with me was Nopi’s reason for starting his laundry business—to help his peers who had been laid off during the pandemic. This aligned closely with my own motivations for establishing my startup. While my focus is on environmental sustainability, a significant part of my mission is also to support others and create positive change, just as Nopi aimed to do through his ventures.

Nopi’s entrepreneurial mindset extends beyond laundry. He has diversified into other ventures, such as opening a barber shop, and aspires to launch more businesses, including a coffee shop, to address community needs. His emphasis on operational excellence, timely service, and professional standards has set his businesses apart, showcasing his resilience and resourcefulness in building sustainable models even in volatile markets.

Additionally, during the presentation by BYPW, I gained deeper insights into Bali’s water challenges. It made me appreciate the convenience of having clean, drinkable tap water in Singapore, highlighting the stark contrast and explaining why we had been warned against consuming tap water in Bali. This reflection underscored the importance of sustainable solutions for such fundamental issues.
