A few months ago, I attended a music composition workshop titled “Cross-disciplinary approaches to improvisation”.

During the workshop, I was taught about how different types of sounds work together to form a cohesive piece of music. For example, the instructors fused Chinese opera singing with other polarising sounds, such as electric guitar playing and electronic dance music, to paint a scene of a deer running in the forest. Following the example, I learnt about how to create textures in sound, and how to harmonise and layer them to make my own unique piece of music.

While I got to learn an array of musical techniques, I wished that I took more initiative in asking questions to the professionals instead of keeping them to myself, as I feel that doing so will allow me to build confidence while clarifying doubts that may surface again.

Overall, I found this workshop to be very interesting, as I was able to explore less contemporary and conventional forms of music. I also felt that this workshop was very useful to my future career, as I am able to use the above knowledge and skills learnt to produce unique and intricate songs in the future. Furthermore, I able to converse and network with music professionals aside from the instructors, thus allowing me to meet like-minded individuals and gain new insights regarding music production.

In the future, I hope to attend similar workshops, and be more confident in asking questions and networking. I’ll continue to take steps towards working in the music industry!
