I love being a member of my school’s Dance Club.
Dance is one of my biggest passions, but over the past year, I’ve realised it’s not just about performing - it’s become a way for me to grow as a person.
As a shy person, I’ve struggled to express myself in front of others, but being part of the Dance Club has helped me overcome that and become more confident.
As a beginner, I had to be innovative and disciplined to improve my skills while balancing schoolwork. In my free time, I broke down the dance choreography into smaller sections and practiced them in short intervals. This method helped me memorise the dance steps more efficiently. Alongside staying consistent with my practice, I was able to become a better dancer.
A major turning point was when I volunteered to perform a freestyle in front of the Dance Club. In the past, I usually avoided putting myself in the spotlight because I was afraid of giving the “wrong” answer or saying something “wrong”. However, after months of practice, I decided to challenge myself during the Club’s freestyle battle even though I felt scared.
As I stepped up and started to dance, I realised that there is no “right” or “wrong” in freestyle. I just had to trust in myself and focus on the flow of my movements. When I was done, the cheers from my clubmates gave me the confidence boost I needed to keep improving and challenging myself in the future.
My ultimate goal is to create a dance that would showcase my growth not only as a dancer but also as an individual who’s become more confident and disciplined. It’s my dream to perform this at a competition!
