A future beyond borders is a world where young people—regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender—can dream and coexist in harmony, free from all forms of violence.
Reflecting on my journey as a young peacebuilder in Mindanao, Philippines, I have had the privilege of listening to the aspirations of youth determined to achieve peace in a region long marked by socio-political conflicts.
Peace is more than just the absence of war. Youth living in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao often express a yearning for everyday freedoms that many of us take for granted. Their profound hopes offer invaluable insight into what peace truly means to them. A dream of an ideal society free from persistent fear and violence.
Many young people in this region face the heavy burden of stigma and discrimination tied to their ethnic identities. This is further compounded by intergenerational trauma, where deep-rooted prejudices and stereotypes perpetuate cycles of violence. These barriers not only limit the potential of youth but also hinder their participation in democratic processes, stifling the growth and development of their communities.
Breaking these cycles requires a commitment to fostering understanding, empathy, and accountability for past injustices. We must empower youth to take the lead towards a future grounded in lasting and sustainable peace.
