Today was yet another enriching day filled with learning, hands-on experiences, and cultural exploration. We started our day with a visit to a rice farm, where we had the opportunity to not only witness traditional rice farming methods but also engage in an insightful discussion led by representatives from MPH. Their talk focused on recycling, waste management, and environmental sustainability, shedding light on how their organization is working to educate communities on proper waste separation and reducing wastage.

One of the key takeaways from this session was understanding how improper waste disposal contributes to environmental degradation and how simple habits—like sorting trash correctly—can have a massive impact. In Bali, waste management is a pressing issue, and MPH’s efforts to promote recycling and sustainable practices are crucial in addressing this challenge. They emphasized how educating the local population on responsible consumption, reducing plastic use, and repurposing materials can create long-term benefits for both the environment and the economy. It was eye-opening to see how much effort goes into managing waste in a place that heavily relies on tourism, and it made me reflect on my own habits regarding sustainability.

After the talk, we had the unique experience of planting rice in a paddy field. Stepping into the muddy water, feeling the earth beneath my feet, and carefully planting each rice seedling gave me a newfound appreciation for the hard work that farmers put into growing one of the world’s most essential food staples. The process required patience, precision, and teamwork, and it was incredible to think about how much effort goes into something that we often take for granted on our plates. This experience reinforced the importance of agriculture and the need to support sustainable farming practices, ensuring that future generations continue to have access to quality food.

After leaving the rice fields, we headed to an art market, where we had the chance to explore and shop for local crafts, souvenirs, and handmade goods. The market was bustling with vibrant colors, intricate carvings, and a wide array of beautifully crafted items that showcased Bali’s rich artistic heritage. Walking through the stalls, I could see how deeply art and craftsmanship are embedded in Balinese culture, with each item telling a story of tradition and creativity. It was also fascinating to interact with the local artisans, who take pride in preserving their heritage through their work.

To end the day, we had dinner at a renowned restaurant famous for its crispy duck, a dish that has since become a staple across Bali. This particular restaurant was the first to introduce crispy duck, pioneering a food trend that many other restaurants eventually adopted. The dish itself was absolutely delicious—crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. Learning about how this restaurant sparked a culinary movement was an interesting insight into how food innovation can influence an entire market.

Today’s experiences gave me a deeper understanding of sustainability, agriculture, local craftsmanship, and the impact of food trends on the economy. The lessons from the MPH talk made me more conscious of my role in environmental responsibility, while planting rice gave me a hands-on appreciation for farming. Exploring the art market allowed me to experience the depth of Balinese creativity, and the crispy duck dinner was a perfect example of how one simple idea can revolutionize an entire industry.

It was a well-balanced day filled with meaningful learning, cultural appreciation, and amazing food, making me even more grateful for the opportunity to explore and immerse myself in Bali’s traditions and innovations.
