Safe Spaces Begin With Us: A Youth's Reflection on Responsibilty and Courage
Attending the webinar conducted by KAWSA Philippines about the role of women, men, and the LGBTQIA+ community in promoting safe spaces opened my eyes to how powerful unity and awareness can be. Before this session, I thought safe spaces were simply places where people feel comfortable. Now I understand that safe spaces are built through conscious actions, respectful conversations, and the willingness to protect one another from harm and discrimination. It made me realize that silence can sometimes allow injustice to continue, while speaking up can create change.
One of my biggest realizations is that being part of the youth means carrying both influence and responsibility. We are not too young to make a difference. Our words, attitudes, and decisions shape the environment around us, whether in school, online, or in our communities. This session encouraged me to be more observant of how others are treated and to stand firm in supporting fairness and inclusion for everyone, regardless of gender or identity.
Moving forward, my goal is to use my voice more responsibly and courageously. I want to help create spaces where people feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion. I also hope to continue educating myself and encouraging my peers to do the same, because change starts with understanding. As members of this generation, we have the opportunity to build a culture rooted in respect, empathy, and dignity. If we choose to act with compassion and integrity, we can help ensure that safe spaces are not just discussed in webinars, but truly experienced in everyday life by every person around us.
