What I learned on my service trip to Cebu, Philippines

A year ago, my journey to Cebu, Philippines, with Gawad Kalinga (GK) taught me more about community than I ever expected. GK, which builds sustainable villages in partnership with local communities, connected our school service club with a vibrant neighborhood that would change my perspective forever.

I'll never forget stepping out of our van and being immediately surrounded by the neighborhood's welcoming committee – fifty kids racing toward us, their laughter echoing through the streets. Throughout the village, excited whispers and giggles followed us, creating an atmosphere of warmth that immediately made us feel like part of their community rather than visitors.

The days that followed became a blur of shared moments: intense basketball games where local teens showed me moves I'd never seen before, impromptu art sessions that turned into exchanges of drawing techniques, and math puzzles that often left me scratching my head at their creative solutions. I couldn't ignore the fact that these moments reminded me of myself and how I had the same hobbies and creativity as them when I was younger.

Behind these daily interactions, though, lay challenges I couldn't ignore. Many teenagers here looked years younger than their actual age due to limited access to nutritious food – a stark reminder of the systemic issues GK works to address. Yet these same teens approached each day with remarkable resilience and determination, teaching me lessons about strength and gratitude that no classroom could ever provide.

On our final day, saying goodbye proved harder than I'd imagined. As small hands gripped my shirt and voices asked when I'd return, I realized these weren't just kids I'd met on a service trip – they had become friends who had shared their world with me, taught me their games, and showed me what true community looks like. While I came to their village thinking I would be the one giving help, I left having received something far more valuable: a profound lesson in what it means to be part of a community that lifts each other up, no matter what challenges they face.
