I had the pleasure of accompanying my RVI supervisors to our very first SIM IGNITE Career Fair in September to spread the word of our company and, most importantly, recruit more youths to join our platforms!

At that point in time I have just recently been promoted from intern to freelancer (yay!) and sought to prove my dedication by doing the best job I can that day. I was further motivated by my boss, Sheila’s goal of recruiting 50 new users onto our platform. A very daunting number to achieve in the span of a couple hours but I had faith that we’ll be able to pull it off.

As we all probably already know (since we’re on this platform lol), RVI’s platform is an extensive and accessible hub of opportunities that youths can tap into to help them pursue the careers they want. From internship offers to portfolio workshops to youth programmes, I believe RVI has an accurate understanding on how to support youths and has dedicated a lot of time, effort and research to ensure youths feel less alone when blazing their own path. I strongly believe in RVI’s mission and vision which helped me stay confident when engaging with the students attending the fair.

I was thrown many curveballs while manning our booth, such as eager students asking a literal freelancer for a job on the spot, but I found my footing and discovered an effective way of marketing ourselves. The key is in understanding why these students are here in the first place - to find jobs. So I emphasised more on our services that could help make that process easier. This meant sharing about our Opportunities page, which compiles multiple jobs for them to choose from, and our Portfolio system, which allows them to share more about themselves outside of school, giving them a competitive edge.

After 5 long hours of non-stop yammering, I was so stoked to hear that not only did we hit our 50 users goal, but we managed to exceed it! Sheila, Alicia, Adani and I worked really hard together and I was so glad we succeeded :D!!

The career fair overall was an amazing experience both as a learning point and a general exposure to different people and companies out there. I was touched that some students knew who we were and came up to us to say that they were inspired by what we do and I got some valuable insights talking to different companies attending the fair as well. I hope to use my experience that day to keep me inspired and motivated as I continue my journey with RVI ^^
