This reflection is about one of my modules, Immersive Environmental Design. In said module we designed and created environments for video games using Unreal Engine
During this module, I learned how to make a basic map design for a video game and also learned how to put textures I want into said map.
Throughout the term we worked on a small environment where we followed the teacher to make it into a kind of valley with a river at the bottom of it. We were allowed to add any foliage we wanted so I put some trees and bushes surrounding the river. Then we started working on a project that ended at the end of the term, at first, I thought that this would be easy with all the skills that I learnt, but it was the opposite. I found it very frustrating to make my environment for my project that I gave up at the end and submitted the half-baked project so a could finally relieve my stress.
What stood out to me was how frustrating it was to get the textures to work properly, they would sometimes not be able to paint over other textures, requiring me to find a new texture because I was not going to death with that.
Overall, I learned basic map design, basic map creation and how to implement textures into a map. If I could, I would have paid more attention in class instead of playing games while the teacher was talking. If I had just listened to the teacher, I would not have been so frustrated with my project and would have not given up so easily.
