Stepping back to Art as a woman in STEM

I’ve always loved studying science since primary school. Not just because I enjoyed getting free gifts/snacks for scoring well, but I enjoyed learning a little about what’s around us. From cabinets to your daily medicine, the world around us is surrounded by endless combinations of different chemicals that in the end is shown to the world!

I wish I could say the same for Art but I wasn’t an Art person back then. Yes, I draw daily. Yes, I have imaginary play with my dolls. However, when my art doesn’t look ‘good’ or ‘amazing’ it makes me feel upset, frustrated even.

“All the efforts I’ve put on this just for it to turn into scrap?” I asked myself.

Things started to change when I went to secondary school, where my art teachers push for creativity & effort for the second year examination. Secondly, my form teacher gave me an opportunity to try out Warhammer (will share more details on another post soon!). With my teacher’s support & my classmates’ encouragement, I slowly fell in love with creating my definition of a masterpiece. Even if it doesn’t turn out the way I would hoped to be, my efforts won’t go in vain as I appreciate every single stroke of colour in my artwork. Learning how I can colour properly, refine the details to my liking and exploring different artists with different styles.

N-level was a huge opportunity for me to redeem myself in rekindling my love for the art. Staying back at school til night for finishing touches, taking photos around the school for inspiration and trying my best to implement feedbacks from my art teacher. Despite not getting my goal of acing the art exam, I was thrilled to see all my hard work altogether & accomplishing something.

Ever since I graduated from secondary school, I’ve never failed to express my art side even in small ways..from sketching on my notes to editing pictures for my school’s student council page to even designing a prototype for a volunteer event!

As a person who didn’t appreciate art back then, take your time with it! Never force a connection within yourself & the art because art has no boundaries or limits! Appreciate everyone for reading this post and wishing everyone a good day :)
