Being a 17-year old international student moving out to a totally new country alone is totally not easy.
I was born and raised in Myanmar, completed up to secondary education there, did Cambridge O-level and had my ideal teenage life there. I always dreamt of studying abroad since I was a child, so the dreams felt surreal when I got accepted from Singapore Polytechnics and came here but still felt uneasy with the thought of being a solo.
I will have to include my outside school life if I have to talk about my Poly Journey so far. I used to be an extrovert and outgoing but as I came to Poly, I slowly convert into an introvert. I tried to think of the reasons, and I found out one of the reasons is language barrier.
Although I could speak in English well, I couldn't catch up with Singlish. Therefore, I attended language binding program in Poly and that really helped me through my communication with people here. I'm also trying to turn myself into the older me who likes to talk to new people and feel ease in communicating with others.
Another problem that I encountered unexpectedly is the stressed I got.
I heard my seniors saying how stressful poly is, but I did not know the "stress" they meant was this much of amount until I was in their shoes. I just finished my term 1 but I was so overwhelmed by all the assignments, projects, presentations and MST.
I found it hard to have study-life balance in the first few weeks. However, I managed to have a balance around week 3 with the help of "myself". I started to change my thoughts.
Rather than thinking pessimistically, I tried to be more optimistic and see the schoolwork as fun tasks to do and steps towards my destination.
I tried to handle my outside school tasks well too like trying to get a better lifestyle alone. It lifted up my mood and made me happy with my other works too.
In the future too, I have decided to work on myself, manage my time well and try to see things differently, get out of my comfort zone. I affirmed to myself that I would live my life at the fullest without regrets and I would color my poly journey vividly.
