How to Read Long Books

I've been a massive fan of Playces' work and what they do to build community life by connecting underused spaces to organisers. Last Sunday was my first time volunteering with them, facilitating an event called 'How to Read Long Books' @ Bricolage.
It was the conductor's first time organising and hosting an event. He never understood book clubs because they distracted him from his true love: reading. Just hearing that made me trust his knowledge. Only a true bookworm would say that! He did amazingly well with a small crowd of 15 or so gathered around this beautiful restaurant. Although soft-spoken, his words were articulate and inspiring. People felt safe enough to share their own opinions and wisdom, and that means that everyone contributed to each other's learning!
Even after the event, many of them hung around, and that's where the lasting impressions and connections truly start to form. We shared what we did for work, the different interests we had, reading techniques and swapped Instagrams. I may not remember their names, but I'm sure I'll remember their faces when I catch them at the next event! Familiarity nurtures connection.
