Disparity and the diverging intentions of Government

It is clear from how the Singaporean Government has treated its indigenous people, that money and capital is of the most importance. Though that was never in doubt for me, I had never witnessed a more disparaging disparity before today. The sight of the Orang Laut’s community space being crammed into the corner of a sprawling and spacious park, fenced in and restricted, contrasted by the $100 million mega-yacht and a sea of luxury just across the bay, stands testament to a silent oppression.

Put yourself into the shoes of the Orang Laut. Your one space to practice your traditions and culture, which you fought so desperately for, dwarfed in the shadow of a horizon of wealth. As the Government continues to delay and ignore your calls for support, the privileged, parked along the same shore, thrive in the Government fast-lane.

The Government’s calls for unity, racial harmony, acceptance, equality and meritocracy feel empty when the country’s bottom line is considered with merely the facade of empathy.
