When I graduate from ITE Higher Nitec as a pastry and baking student with a 2.3 GPA(its pathetic, i know), I wasn't sure what my path would be like. I have always told myself that being in polytechnic and getting a diploma, would guarantee success😕.
But I instead went to Kaplan, under recommendations of my former lecturer, suggesting I take a private diploma, if polytechnic through JAE was not an option. Which I did, then went to Murdoch University on a double major bachelor's degree in hospitality and tourism management and management, taking part in individual and group projects, doing powerpoints and essays, taking notes for written and online exams, reminding my teammates to finish their work all the time(which is really annoying😓).
Not to mention, one of my parents have told me to start thinking of my career options 5-6 months before I offically graduate on November, and I have started planning on my options like Management association programs from hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Four Seasons etc, and if that is not successful (at all), I would consider other options in the hotel industries like F&B.
Until I attended on this "portfolio building" workshop on my last trimester of studies that I started thinking. How would building my portfolio strengthen my chances of finding a job in Singapore’s turbulent job market? From writing what I was 5 years ago, and writing the goals that I have set myself to complete at the end of 2026 or the start of 2027, I have thought of how attending this workshop can prepare me to stand out from other potential graduates from SG universities like NUS and SIT.
I know that one will fail from the start, but with support from my family, former classmates, and former lecturers, I know that I will be able to succeed in finding the job I want before or after I graduate 🎓👩🎓.
