I discovered my passion for tutoring back in primary school when I tutored my juniors in reading. I was one of the few students who struggled with english in Primary 1 and I hoped for a senior who related to offer me additional support. Once I gained mastery over the subject, I strived to become what I once hoped someone would have been to me.
Ever since, I have sought to share my knowledge with others and help them to the best of my abilities. In 2024, I found out about an opportunity available for me to tutor lower secondary students and help them with their english, which had now become one of my stronger suits. I was curious about the new things I could learn from this experience. In addition, I hoped to give back to the community.
Engaging with my tutees allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and adapt to their different styles of learning. A few challenges I faced were learning how to engage with them and get my point across in a manner that they could relate to as well as ensuring that they were motivated to learn and believed in themselves. I researched on various teaching styles from the internet as well as teachers that I knew. This gave me more insights on how different styles catered to different students and how I can improve.
This project allowed me to adventure out of the communities I usually interact with and learn more about how I can contribute meaningfully. The sense of fulfillment I gained once I saw my tutee score well made the 3 months of after-school time spent worth every second.
