The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a rigorous and highly regarded educational program worldwide, including Singapore. An announcement from the IB organization on 1st March 2023 has sparked debates among educators and students about the future of education in Singapore. They announced that it will allow its students to use an AI-powered language model, ChatGPT, for their essays. Educators and critics question the role of technology in education, the impact of AI on creativity and originality, and the fairness of assessment standards. An IB spokesperson has responded to the queries saying that “The IB will not ban the use of artificial intelligence software... That is the wrong way to deal with innovation. It is more sensible to adapt and teach students how to use these new tools ethically.” I too believe that ChatGPT should be embraced as a powerful learning tool that can greatly enhance the learning experience of students.

Firstly, AI tools such as ChatGPT are able to help students improve their writing skills, including grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. As a language AI, ChatGPT is able to provide instant feedback and suggestions for improvement, hence allowing students to learn from their mistakes and improve their writing. "This is a force multiplier for writing. I expect them to use it." University of Pennsylvania's Ethan Mollick said, expressing his desire for his students to use said AI tool to "write more" and "better".

Secondly, ChatGPT can assist students who have great ideas but struggle with expressing their thoughts and ideas in writing. ChatGPT is able to provide its assistance to the students and help summarize their thoughts into an essay which students can use as reference. "Although narrative essays frequently describe personal experiences, you can still use ChatGPT for inspiration," said Ivypanda in a blog. ChatGPT can be a source of inspiration for students, as it can generate creative ideas and prompts that students may not have considered before.

Thirdly, In Singapore, there is a strong emphasis on developing a workforce that is equipped with digital skills and able to navigate the fast-paced and ever-changing landscape of technology. Encouraging the use of ChatGPT in education can help to prepare students for this reality by giving them exposure to AI-powered tools that they are likely to encounter in their future careers. An article by IE Insights states that "These AI systems are here to stay, so we best embrace them, optimize their potential, and try to get the best out of them." By integrating ChatGPT into the classroom, students can become more familiar with how AI works and how it can be used to their advantage.

The use of ChatGPT can help students to express their ideas more effectively and improve their critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in Singapore's education system. I believe that the IB program made the correct decision and we should treat ChatGPT as an ally in education instead of fearing progress.
