I had the opportunity to volunteer at a MINDS MYG event, where we spent meaningful days engaging with individuals with special needs. The event’s aim was to help participants experience Singapore’s culture in a fun and sensory way through games, movement, and lots of laughter. As a game facilitator, I helped to lead and run several game stations, including a large-scale version of Snakes and Ladders and a Sensory Walk designed to engage all five senses. Through these activities, participants got to touch, listen, see, smell, and even taste different aspects of local life from textures inspired by nature to sounds and smells that reminded them of Singapore’s unique environment. It was heartwarming to see how each participant expressed joy and curiosity in their own way. Whether it was a smile after rolling the dice or a spark of excitement during the sensory walk, every moment reminded me of the importance of inclusion and patience. Beyond just playing games, this experience taught me how powerful simple interactions can be. It wasn’t about winning or losing, but about connecting and creating a safe, happy space where everyone could explore, learn, and feel part of a larger community. Volunteering with MINDS MYG reminded me that empathy goes beyond understanding. It’s about being present and sharing joy. I left the event not only grateful for the chance to contribute, but also inspired by the resilience and warmth of the participants.
