we just held a beginner’s crochet workshop with Auntie Anitha and Karin as our facilitators. Auntie Anitha is a long time crocheter, from small keychains to dining placemats to large shawls, she has used all kinds of yarn and hooks in the crochet world! Karin has turned her crochet pieces into a small business, so everyone is in good hands during the workshop!

the workshop’s end goal was simple: to crochet a basic granny square with a single coloured yarn. i initially thought this would be a fairly quick and simple workshop, but i was really wrong about that. i had no idea crocheting required so much dexterity, patience and determination to even crochet such a simple square piece. the granny square starts off with securing a slip knot, followed by making a few knots to secure a small crochet chain and a slip stitch, and going one round. the more rounds you make, the larger the square.

as someone who’s dabbled into other craft forms before, this is by far the most difficult craft i’ve done, as perfection does require a lot of patience. additionally, it’s not easy to envision the next step as you’re crocheting along the way, unlike drawing on a large piece of paper.

there were a few participants who completed their granny squares, others managed to make a mini version, which was still no easy feat! i barely got through to the slip stitch step and i gave up, so kudos to all the participants, i really appreciate all of you attending the workshop and i understand the difficulties of crocheting too.

with that said, there’s still improvements to be made for future workshops, and we will definitely make the next workshop a better one at the RVI Youth Space!
