we just hosted a board game gameplay session, held by none other than Laughing Sticks Pte Ltd with their very own Burnout Board Game!

a game literally designed around burnout in a corporate world, and even those who have not even stepped into the corporate world can relate to it! the game surrounds going through work weeks with different company announcements every week, and as a player, you not only receive a project every week, but you get to pick action cards that can either help you to work smart, change your scope or backstab your peers. i saw so many people picking the backstabbing card to sabotage each other during the game, it was hilarious.

ultimately, the goal of the game is to not burnout while maintaining your reputation in the company. at the end of all weeks, whoever has the highest points for both wins. it was really nice seeing the attendees range from students to working adults, and yet everyone could relate to the game and bond with one another through the gameplay.

the creators also brought another game, one that i really enjoyed as well, called Triggered. it’s meant to be an icebreaker game, whereby you’ll pick 4 cards with varying scenarios and rank them according to how triggered you’ll be with them. the scenarios were all so real that it was actually frustrating, such as “someone in the house uses the last roll of toilet paper and does not refill it” or “people who let their child run and scream in a restaurant”. other players will have to guess your ranking, and the game works so well regardless of whether you know the person or not, because at the end of the day, all of us have different priorities and what we’d find triggering. you can not only learn about a stranger better, you could also discover new things from an old friend! this game was super fun for me and i definitely learnt a lot about the people i played with.

a non-gamer like me is starting to appreciate how games can help a community bond, and i definitely had a lot of fun while playing. i’d highly recommend these games to everyone, and keep your eyes peeled for future gameplay sessions at the RVI Youth Space!
