deco your own lamp event!

our very first community craft event was held a few weeks ago, hosted by our very own youth Xin Jie!

Lights in the Dark: DIY Your Own Lamp was a chill craft session, where attendees could choose their own fabrics, charms, ribbons and with a little imagination (and some glue), everyone left with a fun decorated lamp they can call their own. i even went around asking for what “core” the lamps were. examples included:

• touch grass core
• sylvanian family core
• self discovery core
• cottage core
• granny core
• lolita core
• cosmo and wanda core
• grid core
• holo purple core
• and my favourite, hard core

take a look at the photos and you can decide which “core” belonged to which lamp :D it made me really happy to see everyone so immersed, from choosing a charm to fit their theme to seeing how delighted they were when the lamps turned on, everyone left feeling happy with what they have created. not only that, i got to see people forge new friendships with their table buddies, and that’s what a community is all about.

this session really taught me that a craft activity as simple as decorating your own lamp can help unleash one’s creativity. even for me, i wouldn’t describe myself as a creative person but this session would’ve made me think otherwise, as there were no expectations on what your final lamp should look like. just vibe and charm your lamp up ya know.

both Xin Jie and i also reflected on how we could improve ourselves (for a future event maybe??) and we had a lot of fun collaborating on this event. with that said, do look out for more crafty activities held at the RVI Youth Space!
