farms/food factories in sg

as part of my school assignments, i managed to tour 3 places; Kok Fah Technology Farm, Hay Dairies and Yakult Factory (not pictured).

Kok Fah Technology Farm produces leafy vegetables through traditional farming with integration of automated technologies to improve efficiencies, Hay Dairies is a goat farm that produces mainly goat milk. Yakult Factory is one that most of us have been to when we were younger, and it was interesting that they built their facility on the basis of providing these tours e.g. clear windows that peek into their production facility.

using my culture pass credits, i visited the Nanyang Sauce Brewery, using traditional methods to brew soy sauce in large clay vats under the sun for 9 months.

as interesting as all of their productions were, what i brought back was a deeper understanding of some struggles that these local farms and manufacturers face. for instance, land space is a huge topic for them. with singapore wanting to develop these lands or rather prioritise land space for housing or business skyscrapers, these farmers; who actually need the space to maintain a sustainable business, are forced to spend more on technologies or build upwards to beat rental prices or "fight" for funding. it's quite ironic that we are constantly tattled at to "support local farmers" and yet they are the very people who suppress these local businesses.

it was also interesting to hear that the fundings are prioritised to certain farm categories, especially those who grow vegetables, fish and eggs. this leaves farms like Hay Dairies to be left with less funding and needing to prove their worth by integrating sustainable energy practices (which they do via solar power) and more advanced technologies (which will cost millions for them).

the next time you visit supermarkets, do look out for these brands and support them!
